The Graphic Design curriculum focuses on creating intelligent and powerful visual communication. Students build a strong foundation for a graphic design career by learning design techniques, visual thinking, concept
development, color, composition, and typography, through case studies and hands-on exercises. Assignments will incorporate problem solving projects that relate to visual communication. The course includes using to
computer as a tool to create, modify and present the visual messages.

Senior Showcase:
Seniors will be creating art for our annual Senior Showcase whick is held in the fall and will add to the students portfolio of work for prospective colleges and/or jobs.
Portfolio:
There will be a yearly submission of a portfolio consisting of selected works produced during the year. The works should be rich in terms of visual exploration and visual impact.
Extra Credit:
Extra credit will be given throughout the year for those students who have turned in all assignments on time. Extra credit will not replace missing assignments; it is used only to improve one’s grade.
Evaluation:
Mastery of the concepts and methods explored in this course will be assessed by individual assignments, a final comprehensive project and a year end portfolio. Each assignment will be graded individually based on the rubric given and of how well the student understands and applies the course materials.
Academic Honesty
Students are expected to abide by the academic integrity on all projects and conduct themselves in professional manner. Take special notice that plagiarism includes the reproduction of “a graphic element” or derivative works “published or unpublished, of another person”. Plagiarism will result in parent and administration notification as well as disciplinary action.
Make up Work:
For any excused absences, a student has one day for each day that they are absent from school to make up work.

- Study the history of design
- Study the works of contemporary artists, designers as well as the masters in the field
- Identify career interests/abilities/skills
- Continue to sketch and/or use basic drawing techniques and lettering
- Produce well thought original layouts
- Create logos, posters, ads, displays, packaging.
- Write for and research famous designers and agencies
- Produce samples showing understanding of 3 types of color and registration in print
- Demonstrate awareness of times and schedules
- Gain basics of financial literacy
- Use time effectively and efficiently
- Prepare a mechanical separation for reproduction
- Practice the technique of evaluating own work as well as others work
- Demonstrate employable skills and work habits: ethic, dependability, promptness, getting along with others
- Work cooperatively with others, work well as a team
- Brainstorm ideas for projects and products
- Develop skills and proficiency in paste-up
- Use type effectively in Adobe Illustrator, InDesign and Photoshop
