The Graphic Design curriculum focuses on creating intelligent and powerful visual communication. Students begin to build a foundation for a graphic design career by learning design techniques, visual thinking, concept development, color, composition, and typography, through case studies and hands-on exercises. Assignments will incorporate problem solving projects that relate to visual communication. The course includes introduction to computer as a tool to create, modify and present the visual messages.
Objectives:

• Define common use trade terms
• Introduction to basic tools and equipment
• Study the works of contemporary artists, designers as well as the masters in the field
• Begin to identify career interests
• Distinguish between good and poor design
• Identify and describe the elements and principles of visual design
• Practice sketching, basic drawing techniques and lettering
• Introduce standard design processes
• Use perspective correctly
• Define gray, tint, shade and tone and produce a value scale
• Demonstrate a knowledge of basic color theory and apply it to design-related problems
• Identify the basic parts of the computer and identify their functions
• Begin learning constructive criticism techniques
• Begin working on conceptual skills
• Begin to learn basic computer skills: Adobe Illustrator, InDesign and Photoshop
• Create simple design projects by hand and computer: flyers, book covers, etc.
It is essential that students should work on their projects during their designated class periods. Students are evaluated according to how well they meet the criteria of creativity, accuracy, execution etc.) Students are expected to: complete personal assignments, complete required readings and tutorials, show ability to critically evaluate and reflect on their learning, development and achievements within the context of visual design.
Largest Freshman Project: Final project which starts around the 2nd week of class
Design the Fundamental of Designs book. I will give you all the supplies. This design project is worth 2 grades. In it you will interpret the Elements and Principles of Designs.
Evaluation:
Mastery of the concepts and methods explored in this course will be assessed by individual assignments, a final comprehensive project and a year end portfolio. Each assignment will be graded individually based on the rubric given and of how well the student understands and applies the course materials.

Students are expected to abide by the academic integrity on all projects and conduct themselves in professional manner. Take special notice that plagiarism includes the reproduction of “a graphic element” or derivative works “published or unpublished, of another person”. Plagiarism will result in parent and administration notification as well as disciplinary action.
